A high-speed rail link to Bangkok is planned but years away. Air quality deteriorates significantly from February to April due to agricultural burning ("burning season"). Check AQI forecasts if you have respiratory concerns — many expats leave during this period. The cool season (Nov–Feb) is spectacular, with temperatures dropping to 15–20°C at night — rare for Thailand. Chiang Mai has a strong expat community with social groups, volunteer opportunities, and English-speaking services.
