Overview

Mueang Chiang Mai is the city's central district, encompassing the famous moated Old City (a 700-year-old walled square), the Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) trendy neighborhood, and the Chiang Mai University campus area. This is where most expats, digital nomads, and tourists spend their time — and where the densest concentration of cafes, coworking spaces, temples, and markets is found.

Lifestyle

• Old City — Inside the moat. Temples on every corner (Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh), guesthouses, art galleries, and the Sunday Walking Street market. Charming but can feel touristy. Affordable studios and guesthouses.
• Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) — The lifestyle hub. MAYA mall, One Nimman, hundreds of cafes and restaurants, coworking spaces (CAMP, Punspace). The most popular area for digital nomads. Modern condos, walkable grid layout.
• Chang Phueak / North of Old City — Local night food market (Chang Phueak Gate), more residential feel, slightly cheaper than Nimman.

Is It Good for Digital Nomads?

Mueang Chiang Mai is arguably the best district in Southeast Asia for digital nomads. Fast fiber internet (100–500 Mbps), dozens of coworking spaces, cafes with power outlets everywhere, and a cost of living under 30,000 THB/month including rent. The Nimman area alone has more coworking options than most cities.

Price Guide

Condos near Nimman: 50,000–90,000 THB/sqm. Old City studios: 5,000–10,000 THB/month rental. Nimman 1-bed condos: 10,000–20,000 THB/month. Extremely affordable by international standards — a fully furnished modern 1-bed condo with pool and gym rents for what a parking space costs in central Bangkok.
